This equestrian statue stands in tribute to Ludwig I, the king of Bavaria from 1825 until the 1848. As admirer of ancient Greece and the Italian renaissance, Ludwig patronised the arts and was an avid collector of classical artefacts. Many of which are on display in various museums such as the Glyptothek, the Old and the New Pinakothek. This statue depicts Ludwig on horseback while wearing his royal regalia and holding the royal sceptre aloft in his right hand. Next to his on the right is his page, holding onto the reigns of the horse. Not a must see, but worth a small detour if in the Odeonsplatz area.

At Odeonsplatz you will find an equestrian statue of King Ludwig I who ruled over Bavaria between 1825-48. This is the work of German sculptor Max von Widnmann (1865). What you find here is a classical 19th-century equestrian monument of the Bavarian king, dressed in regal attire with the royal sceptor raised in his right hand while he grips the horse rein with his left. He gazes into the distance while his horse trots forward. There are bronze figures of young page boys on both sides of King Ludwig. The three statues stand upon a broad square-shaped pedestal with four additional bronze figures mounted on the corners. In the end, this is a nice equestrian statue that is worth spending a few minutes to enjoy if you are a fan of viewing monuments and learn a bit about local history during your travels.

That statue was created in 1862 by the sculptor Max von Widnmann. An ordinary statue of the king, which perpetuates the memory of him for those who see this monument and know about this person. Simple and quite nice sight. In fact, in this country, even the most ordinary monuments look very good from the point of view of art (except for the black color and dulling)

Pretty monument. Visit in summer and view it against a warm background of blue skies. Lots to see in the vicinity. Just a few hundred meters down the road is Odeonsplatz and the Residenz Palace. West of the monument takes you to the cluster of art museums, north of the monument takes you to the Üniversität area.
