Museum of one of Germany's most important archaeological sites. The Iron Age town of Manching was enormous, covering 360 hectares and enclosed by a massive 'murus Gallicus' wall 7km perimeter. Much of the site has been destroyed by an airport in the 1930s and the present town but archaeological excavations have revealed the outlines of buildings, workshops and temples in parts of the site. This was one of the most important towns in northern Europe in the last four centuries BC. The exhibition is beautifully set out but more as an art museum than an as an interpretation of the fascinating archaeology. Good models though. Also the well preserved remains of two Roman patrol boats. Worth visiting the ramparts of Iron Age Manching too.
