Bidders Beware! Zemanek-Münster Fails to Disclose Damage to Auctioned Property. Our organization had made an online purchase from the recent Zemanek-Münster Discovery Auction in Germany, and received the property damaged. One of the two Makonde masks purchased arrived with a huge crack that literally split the sculpture in half. Since this major defect was not disclosed in the auction description, nor visible in the auction photograph, our initial reaction was that it must have occurred during shipping. In addition, the Zemanek-Münster Shipping Department neglected to pack the artifacts properly, resulting in the masks just rolling around at the bottom of the box. At first Karin Münster (auction owner) attempted to blame Customs for the damage and missing packaging materials, but after DHL noted the damage would not qualify as a claim (lack of packing materials), to our amazement David Zemanek (auction specialist) disclosed the damage was pre-existing. Instead of addressing their catalog error in a professional manner, Mr. Zemanek attempted to divert blame in our direction. Unaware of the failed response to our email inquiry before the auction proceedings, Mr. Zemanek accused us of not requesting a condition report, and later claimed Zemanek-Münster never received our first email. In addition, there were several other emails that received no response (catalog request, shipment notification, tracking number, etc.). Nonetheless, David Zemanek continued to elude the deceiving auction photo and finally hid behind their ambiguous auction description to avoid further liability. He has since stopped responding to emails. The sad fact is we would have likely continued as patrons if the issue had been addressed ethically and professionally. Again, beware of this company and bid at your own risk! Brian / Joseph
