My first introduction to the Australian Silky was when I was house sitting in Paddington, Sydney, Australia and the owner had a little Silky called GinGin. She was an adorable girl with an eye for mischief and extremely smart. Silkies are strong little dogs and very graceful with a lovely ‘silky’ flowing coat. Their coat will need constant brushing and GinGin loved her daily grooming session and looked forward to it. They are quite willful and a bit naughty but that is true of many smart dogs, they are always pushing the boundaries and like to know who is in charge (not them!). They are super inquisitive and will spend their days racing around their home or garden checking out every smell and even inventing their own games. They will chase things you can’t see but the Silky will be hot on the trail of something – you can be sure of that. She may be a tiny tot but anyone who comes to your door will not arrive unannounced. Your Silky will keep up the noise until the visitor has left the building or, you let her know that this is a friend and quite alright for her to enter. They need to mix with strangers, and other dogs at a young age so that they learn to accept people and do not treat everyone with suspicion. They will tolerate other pets quite well and will thoroughly enjoy a game of chasey, particularly if it is a squeaky toy! Keeping your Silky safe and secure requires a dig-proof backyard and a good fence. Being small they can still jump quite high and you would be surprised at how easily they can escape if an area is not properly secured. You will get much enjoyment from your Silky, she will be sensitive and a little aloof but that is all part of her charm.
