Memorial for the Hannover-Stöcken concentration camp by Hans-Jürgen Breuste. Hannover-Stöcken was a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Camp prisoners were used (1943-45) as slave labour in the adjacent ASA battery factory, which later became Varta AG. Towards the end of the war, most of the prisoners were sent on a death march towards Bergen-Belsen. Some, unable to march, were shot on site. An unknown number died as part of the group of over 1000 prisoners murdered at Isenschnibbe, Gardelegen. The latter massacre was perpetrated by members of the local population – Volkssturm, Hitler Youth and firemen – with minor participation of the SS. The attempt to destroy all evidence of the crime was prevented by the swift advance of the US 102nd Infantry Division.

Kann man schön mit dem Hund spazieren gehen. Aber das in Garbsen ein KZ war hätte man in der Schule lernen müssen. Ich wusste es bis dahin nicht.

Sehr beeindruckender Ort, der viel Leid gebracht hat. Auf Schautafeln die Geschichte gut dargestellt. Einige Betonreste des Lagers noch vorhanden.
