A rather typical bureaucratic experience. Service is professional and well-organized, but not particularly quick. Note that your appointment is more of a window of arrival time, and that you will first have to line up outside the building, and then, after you go through security, take a number in the waiting area. So, it's perfectly conceivable that if your appointment is at 9:30, someone who's appointment is at 9:45 or 10:00 but arrived early could end up being served ahead of you. (Likewise, if your appointment is at 10:00, you might be able to squeeze in a tiny bit early if the guards let you pass.) Assume you will be at the office for 90 minutes from the time of your appointment and you will likely be safe. U.S. citizens: the guards will store your small electronics for you in some very tiny lockers (they're not lying when they say they're short on space). You can bring in a bag as well. I noticed family of U.S. citizens were also given this privilege (eg. kid born in U.S., German parents applying for the kid's U.S. passport). There is a play area in the passport services section, as well as a computer and printer. Non-U.S. citizens: alas, they won't let you bring your phones or bags. They claim lack of space rather than security concerns. I'd recommend carrying only your documents, wallet, and a book for the waiting room. You might also see if you can leave things at a nearby shop or restaurant -- it sounded like some might be willing to do that, possibly for a fee. I hope this information is helpful to others.
