Developing future markets such as, for example, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA region) is therefore crucial to the success of the German economy. The geographic proximity to Europe, the young population, the natural resources and the numerous diversification programmes make the MENA region a key partner for Germany. "Made in Germany"​ enjoys an excellent reputation in the region - above all because of the high quality, reliability and innovative strength. As the voice of German business in both Germany and the MENA region, the North Africa Middle East Initiative of German Business (NMI) supports the establishment and expansion of bilateral economic relations. The initiative helps shape the debate on the potential and challenges in the field of trade and investment and communicates any economic concerns German companies may have relating to the MENA region. The NMI is dedicated to fostering the bilateral ties between Germany and the MENA region. The initiative supports visits to the region by the German government (and vice versa) together with business delegations and advocates reducing trade and investment barriers in the region and within the European Union. The initiative’s members are BDI, DIHK, BGA, Afrika-Verein der deutschen Wirtschaft e.V and the Bankenverband. The NMI has high-level contacts at political and economic levels both in Germany and the MENA region, great expertise and a broad network, including the German Chambers of Commerce AHKs / Auslandshandelskammern in the region. It pools regional economic interests and enables a concerted representation of German business interests, thus making it a key player in the field of cooperation between Germany and the MENA countries. In addition to substantive work and policy papers, the NMI is also involved in high-level business events and meetings in Germany and the MENA region. The NMI's activities cover the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, the official Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
