I lived in this building from August 1974 to September 1977 - In those long ago Cold War days This was the location of U.S. Army Security Agency Companies A and B - well as HHC (Headquarters Company) Also, located on the first floor was the unit Mess Hall that served three meals a day in addition to one at midnight. In the basement was located the supply rooms and \Beer Halls\ for the troops. There were four stories to the building. The attic was storage for troop personal luggage and large items. The quarters for the troops were large rooms and usually three soldiers in each room. On each floor were several bathroom. The Orderly rooms were located on the bottom floors and was the television room and recreation room. The USASA was an elite U.S. Army unit requiring troops with above average I.Q.s and education. This was the billeting and HQ area for Field Station Berlin and several times a day Army buses took soldiers to and from Teufelsberg (Devil's Mountain) Communication Site in the British Sector where we spied by electronic means on the Russians, East Germans and Poles. Quite a history to this old building built in the late 19th century. It was the Pussian Kadet Academy until 1920 and from 1933 to 1945, the location of Hitler's personal bodyguard, the dread SS. In 1945 first the Russians and then the Americans (July 4, 1945) took command of the base. In 1994, the U.S. Army withdrew from Berlin and turned the base over to the German Republic.

This was my home from late 1974 to 1976, when it was known as Andrews Barracks and I was in the US Army Signal Corps. I have many fond memories of Berlin and its people, but the Army, not so much.

In 1994, this was the location of the Berlin Brigade, American Army barracks as seen in the accompanying photographs. Army buses left from here on a daily basis and went to Truman Plaza on Clay Allee

Danke!
